The Project | Replace a hail damaged skylight.
This project, contracted by RJI Professionals, Inc., is an excellent example of a typical deck mounted skylight replacement. The residence, located near the Red Rocks Country Club in the southwest Denver metro area, has a hail damaged skylight of a very common size (2′ x 4′) on a shingle roof with a walkable pitch.
We will replace the old skylight with a VELUX FS C06 fixed skylight using their EDL flashing kit. This skylight is designed to fit a rough opening of 22 1/2″ x 46 1/2″.
Remove the old skylight.
The project begins with stripping the shingles and flashing from the area around the skylight. The deck will be exposed about six inches around the skylight. Then it is a simple matter of removing the screws and taking the old skylight off the roof for disposal.
Prep and attach the new skylight.
With the skylight removed, the area is cleaned up and the drywall is carefully trimmed to fit with the new skylight. The skylight is positioned and screwed down to the deck.
Finish the installation.
There are three layers of protection to prevent air and water mitigation. The first layer is the gasket underneath the skylight, the second is the ice and water shield that surrounds the skylight and the third is the engineered sill, head and step flashing.
